Fall officially arrived this week, and while in some areas of the country it still feels like summer, winter is coming and it’s best to be prepared for the impending cold weather months. The fall is actually a great time to do home projects. The oppressive heat and humidity of summer have passed, and the crisper, cooler air makes for a more enjoyable backdrop for home repairs and maintenance.
Here are some important home projects that are well-suited for fall:
Improve your home’s energy efficiency by insulating your attic and caulking around windows, doors and siding. Not only with this make your home warmer once the weather cools down, but fall is actually a great time to perform these tasks for another reason. That’s because the cooler weather will help you more easily identify any drafts!
Clean the gutters. When the leaves fall in autumn, they tend to collect in gutters. When gutters become blocked with debris, they are unable to properly direct water away from your home. This can contribute to moisture in your foundation or in the home’s siding. Additionally, clogged gutters can lead to ice damming in the winter, which can cause damage to your gutters and roof.
Check out the garage. With colder weather, ice and snow coming, you want to make sure there is room for your car in the garage! Take some time to organize everything in your garage, putting bikes, beach chairs and everything else you won’t use during the colder months elsewhere. It’s also a great time to make sure you know where your snow shovels and brushes are, so you are ready for the first snowfall.
